 Creating Your Piece
Explained by the Artist.

"Swamp Rendering"

This, for me, is the fun part of the process. Commissions generally are spurred from an idea, a picture, a photo and/or a memory. No project is ever considered too large or too small. Smaller works for you avid fishermen, hunters and outdoor lovers are just as welcome as larger projects for the home or office.

* Though this page focuses on the production and creation of commissioned stained glass works, I am more than happy to entertain any and all ideas that focus on other mediums.  For example, Cray Pas or Oil on Canvas (as seen in The Gallery) for portraiture, land/seascapes, and any other projects you can dream up. Projects in other mediums will follow the same first two steps outlined below. *

Step One
The first step in creating your work is a simple conversation about the general direction you wish to take your art in. This exploratory discussion will include the scale and subject matter of your envisioned final product. It can either take place directly over the phone or through email. For larger projects, such as those required by business owners, I would prefer to meet in the client’s office or restaurant whenever possible. Calls from interior designers, builders and architects interested in incorporating my work into their projects are also welcomed.
In situations where a meeting is not possible I can simply work from your photos, plans and/or any other material you make available to me.

Step Two
The second step is moving on to the sketch and design phase. I will work directly with you here to generate a series of sketches that gradually bring your idea or concept into focus. All of your suggestions (atmosphere you’re trying to create, availability of lighting etc.) are taken into account during this time. Once the idea or image is settled on then I go to work and begin to break the subject matter down into workable pieces of glass. For most projects I require a non-refundable deposit once we've reached this phase. Then comes the next stage, or what I like to refer to as “painting with glass.”

At this stage I’m usually able to give you, the client, a fairly accurate quote on a price for the work. If you have previously specified a budget it will be taken into consideration during the design phase.

Price
The price of the work depends highly on the materials used and a time estimate. Time will depend on the intricacy and size of your design. Additional costs include packaging and shipping insurance as well as installation. (+ sales tax where applicable)
*We cover the costs of shipping your art.

* For projects in other mediums the price will be considerably less then that of a stained glass work. Your price for these works will depend on the size, time, and intricacy of the piece. *

From the Artist:
Manipulating glass can be inherently challenging, that's the beauty of this medium.  There's always an element of surprise once the piece is lifted into the natural light. No light table can truly convey how the finished subject matter will come together. I've been at this for over twenty years now and still get excited every time I lift any of my work.  Ultimately, parting with each commissioned piece is always a challenge for me but then there's always another in the wings.  If you choose to embark on a Molunkus piece you'll have the solace in knowing that no other party has what you have, "an original", and the pattern is yours to keep.

"PaintingWithGlass"
Once a client approves his/her design and we’ve agreed on a price I then will begin to bring your piece to life. I provide every client with a general schedule of completion at this point and am more then happy to provide photo updates via email for those projects that don’t require me to travel from my home studio.

Please call, write or email me at Molunkus Designs if you want to discuss commissioning a wildlife portrait in the form of a stained glass piece or any other medium, for your home, restaurant, office or any other setting.
